206 Universal / 206 Zulu is hosting an all-city youth summit that will take place February 12, 2010 (Black History Month in conjunction with the 6th Anniversary of 206 Zulu - National Hip Hop Summit) as part of an effort to engage and ultimately empower high school youth by creating an understanding from dialogue through various discussions, including subjects such as Hip Hop, racism, discrimination, misogyny, economics, media and politics. The focal point in which we plan to open this dialogue is through the artistic aspects of Hip Hop culture. The summit will be comprised of youth driven workshops, panels, art and music showcases.
The location of activities are the Nothwest Rooms within the Seattle Center premises, an area of Seattle that is intended to be central for the schools attending.
On the platform of Race and Social Justice our aim is to breakdown barriers between age, class and ethnicity where we as a citizens of Seattle can begin the process of problem solving common issues that exist across neighborhood and community lines. We will use Hip Hop Culture as a vehicle to address serious issues such as glorification of violence, misogyny, misconduct in media representation, miscommunication between youth and law enforcement, positive conflict resolution, uplift of ourselves for our families and community. The overall goal is to give our teens a place to interchange ideas, diverse exposure to other cultures and ways to connect with each other so they can bring tangible solutions back to there respective communities. Its been suggested by the teens that members from the Seattle Police Department, Seattle City Council and the Seattle Public School Board be approached to attend these discussions so that policies and legislation can be created or amended to address the concerns.
NEIGHBORHOOD INVOLVEMENT:
206 Universal has amassed many of our neighborhood members including several of our local community centers where we have met with our youth and helped them implement and plan our proposed project for 2010. They have been instrumental in giving suggestions on how best to cater to their peer group to maximize their turnout for this project. Theyve also given invaluable input regarding activities and topic discussion ideas that are at the forefront of their concerns. Some of these issues include employment, personal safety (youth violence), lack of all ages events and diminishing after school programs. They were key in helping propose our location for this project as we agreed the Seattle Center is ideal because it is a neutral site for this event. Touching upon the neutrality issue, the teens felt it was in the best interest to avoid holding this in a neighborhood where there is existing conflicts between another neighborhood. This will encourage teens citywide to participate throughout this program.
We aim to develop these relationships with our generations and our local businesses through this project and beyond. This is integral to our community because we want to help use our resources to enrich our teens with networking with parents, resource advocates, former gang members and positive role models through panel discussions, art expos, workshops and all ages showcases. As we develop more youth councils and teen led programs it will benefit all in the greater Seattle area and bridge intergenerational gaps while empowering our teens to embrace other cultures and age dynamics.
Furthermore, we will help shadow teens while they facilitate the workshops (dance, art and music), panel discussions (what their concerns are and will be in the future), youth violence (what are the pressing issues for them and how we can unify our neighborhoods to engage in conflict resolutions). Theyre contributions will also be present in setting the action agenda, planning and promoting the overall event and receiving guidance in the various aspects of achieving a successful event.
